Far across the ocean, to Houston, Texas, the calendar of this year’s Ladies European Tour has brought the best European women. They will play the prestigious Aramco Houston Championship tournament, where both team and individual competitions are played for a total purse of 2 million US dollars. Czech professional Klára Davidson Spilková is also among the best in Aramco-sponsored events.
“We traveled to the United States right after the tournament in Sweden. We wanted to visit Sean’s family briefly and at the same time use the time to focus more on my game, specifically how to handle tense situations on the course with more calm and confidence. Lately, I feel that this is an area where I have room for improvement and growth, and I would like to feel more natural and strong in such moments. This is one of my main goals: to work on more consistency in addition to daily training and tuning all aspects of the game.”
The players also have a new course waiting for them, the park-like Golfcrest Country Club in Houston, Texas, near the Mexican border. The 18-hole course is lined by trees and planted with Bermuda grass, and the local climate is reminiscent of tropical regions.
“The course is new to all of us. It reminds me a lot of Florida courses with Bermuda grass, something different than what we are usually used to in Europe. I have a lot of experience with it myself after four years in Sarasota and it could be an advantage or an opportunity for me to get used to the course faster. We have to be careful especially on the greens and around them, but that’s fine with me. The local climate is also a bit unusual: 33 degrees Celsius, and high humidity, so it feels like the daytime temperatures are approaching forty. Fortunately, we will start in the morning, when the temperature will not be that high. I am really looking forward to the tournament, just like I always do with all American events, which I love very much. We also have a great team, so I believe that we will not only play well, but also enjoy the whole weekend.”
Davidson Spilková starts the tournament in the first group and from hole number one at 8:30 local time in the team of Englishwoman Cara Gainer. The other two members of the team are Northern Ireland’s Annabel Wilson and Spain’s María Hernández. Sára Kousková starts at the same time and as captain from hole no. 10. The third Czech player in the starting field is Kristýna Napoleaová, who will play in the team of English captain Mimi Rhodes. She will start the tournament from hole no. 1 at 8:54.
