Czech professional Klára Davidson Spilková arrived in Australia at the end of February. Her goal is to play four consecutive four-day tournaments. In the first tournament, the Ford Women’s NSW Open, which was accompanied by adverse weather and affected its course, she did not perform as expected. In the second, the Australian Women’s Classic, it was a much better performance and Davidson Spilková finished in a tie for 34th place.

“Australia is always unpredictable and surprises us with something. Usually, when we fly here at the end of summer, it rains at least once. This time was no different, and the first day of the Ford Women’s NSW Open tournament in February was affected by the weather. The first round was interrupted due to flooding of the course, and the next day I had to play both rounds at once. The second week, on the other hand, went great for us, except for the last day. But that’s how it is here at the end of summer. The journey here is long, as it takes almost a whole day. Fortunately, our bodies get used to the change relatively quickly, so adaptation is quite fast. But the first tournament was not quite what I expected. On the other side of the planet, you never know exactly what conditions await you, whether it’s heat, rain or, like last year, a typhoon.”

The Czech professional is now waiting for the Australian pinnacle – the local Women’s Australian Open championship with a purse of 1.7 million Australian dollars. While the first two tournaments were held in New South Wales, the local major will be held at Lockleys near Adelaide. The 18-hole private club Kooyonga opened in 1922 and is one of the local gems, closely associated with Australian golf history. The club has hosted five men’s Australian Opens, with Gary Player and Peter Thompson winning twice. The women’s championship will be played here for the second time, returning to the club after a seven-year absence.

“I went to the course right after arriving in Adelaide to practice a bit and I have to say that it is really very nice. The local region is a promised land for golf, they have courses everywhere you look, and we play on one of the best, it is such a local treasure. What more could you ask for? It is always a pleasure to play on a course that has hosted many of the most prestigious tournaments and is connected to local history. Moreover, of top quality. Australian courses are generally different. They are more reminiscent of Scottish links, they are harder and have elevated greens. The sand in the bunkers is very fine, almost beach sand, and the grass is also different.”

Davidson Spilkova will have her last local tournament after the Australian Open, the Australian WPGA Championship in Queensland on Hope Island. She is scheduled to return to the Czech Republic at the end of March and in April she will play the ALSA charity tournament at her home course, the PGA National in Nebřenice.
