Czech professional golfer Klára Davidson Spilková has made exactly twenty appearances in major tournaments. The upcoming US Championship will be her 21st start at one of the five most prestigious events in the world of women’s golf. This time, after winning the April qualifying tournament in Italy, it will be the eightieth US Women’s Open, played in Wisconsin.

“I’m curious about what feelings I’ll have on the first tee. There will probably be a little nervousness, but that’s part of it. It’s a big tournament, so I’ll try to handle the tension or at least feel focused and with a kind of inner lightness. Actually, it’s thanks to that that I realized how much I’m looking forward to the whole tournament.”

Czech professional players have so far started in only 26 majors. In addition to Davidson Spilková’s twenty appearances (8× The Open, 6× PGA Championship, 4× Evian Championship, US Open, Chevron Championship), they were Jana Peterková (2× US Open), Jana Melichová (2× The Open), Šideri Váňová (The Open) and Kristýna Napoleaová (The Open). However, the total number will be improved this year by the start of amateur Hana Ryšková at the US Open and the double start of Sára Kousková – at the Evian Championship and The Open.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t had time to meet Hanka yet, but I believe that we will manage to do so on Wednesday and maybe have lunch together and exchange our impressions of the course. It’s a major and each player has her time firmly planned and tries to fulfill her clearly defined program first and foremost.”

This year, the US Championship will be held at the Erin Hills inland course near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The entire area, with its character and clubhouse, vaguely resembles a links setting, as if a piece of Scotland that Davidson Spilková loves transplanted into the American landscape.

“Every day we play one practice nine and try to get to know all the holes as best as we can. It is the same as you know it from the photos: beautiful and visually a Scottish links. The organizers have prepared hard and fast greens for us in combination with dense and high roughs. It is an open space where it is often very windy. There are also many bunkers here, and the course as a whole is really extremely interesting. You won’t play anything like it in Czechia or anywhere else in continental Europe. It will be a great experience for which I am truly grateful, and one of my dreams come true.”

Of the 26 Czech entries, only Davidson Spilková has made it to the final rounds, five times in total, with her best finish at The Open in 2018, when she finished tied for 50th.

The US Women’s Open tournament takes place from Thursday, May 29 to Sunday, June 1. Davidson Spilková will start the first round in the afternoon group from hole no. 10 at 2:09 p.m. local time. She will be joined by amateur from Barbados Emily Odwin and Mexican María Fassi.
