Klára Davidson Spilková: …

After the Olympic tournament, Klára Davidson Spilková is now headed to the season’s second peak, the Women’s Open held in the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews. The Czech player qualified for the final major of the season, the AIG Women’s Open, based on her ranking in last year’s Ladies European Tour. The prestigious tournament will be played on the iconic Old Course, and it will be Davidson Spilková’s second appearance at this historic venue in her rich professional career. Despite dealing with ongoing issues with her right hip, which have troubled her since the July tournament in the Netherlands, Davidson Spilková is determined to compete.

Davidson Spilková travelled to the Irish capital directly from St. Andrews, where she played the first two rounds of the final major of the season, the Women’s Open.

“This year’s Open did not turn out as I had hoped, at least in terms of results. The weather played a big role, with long waits and plenty of time spent on the course. We even waited a record 45 minutes on one hole before three other groups finished ahead of us. This was due to strong wind, and everything took much longer than expected. It was also tough due to the cold and frequent showers. On the other hand, it was great to return to this iconic course after eleven years. I was satisfied with my play, but unfortunately I made some mistakes on the greens. The wind even forced us to reduce the green speed to nine feet, otherwise the balls were rolling off. Nevertheless, it was another great experience and a promise for the future. I am not thrilled about the result, but it is an honour to even qualify for St. Andrews and play the tournament. Especially as it also hosts the men’s Open,” Davidson Spilková commented on her performance at St. Andrews.

The Women’s Irish Open is one of Davidson Spilková’s favourite tournaments, but this year it will be held on a completely new course for her.

“I saw this course for the first time in my life. I have never played here before. It is a parkland course with shallow bunkers and gently shaped greens. Additionally, it is much warmer here than the past two weeks in Scotland, which is a relief not just for me and my body but for all the players. I feel well-prepared for the tournament, my game is under control, and I’m really looking forward to the last summer tournament of the year,” the professional golfer reported from Ireland.

Despite dealing with mild health issues with her right hip since mid-July, Davidson Spilková will be playing her fourth tournament in a row.

“Sometimes it takes a lot of mental strength, which I find within myself and the people around me. I have my rituals that help me, and I do meditation every day. I am still learning to accept things as they come and not to fight losing battles. I want to rely only on what I know. There are still many people around me who support me and give me energy. My biggest support is, of course, Sean, who goes through everything with me. Only this way can we survive our demanding life on tour,” Davidson Spilková revealed about her mental preparation.

The tournament will take place from Thursday, 29 August to Sunday, 1 September near Dublin, Ireland. Davidson Spilková will tee off in the afternoon group at 13:36 local time. She will be joined for the first two rounds by local Lauren Walsh and one of the best Dutch players and this year’s Olympian, Anne Van Dam. The tournament will also feature four other Czech golfers: Jana Melichová, Sára Kousková, Kristýna Napoleaová and Tereza Melecká.
