Klára Davidson Spilková: A former Yankees player will caddy for me in Florida

Czech golfer Klára Davidson Spilková will start at the third event of this year’s season at the Feather Sound Country Club in Florida situated between Clearwater and Tampa. Davidson Spilková is among the 84 elite players from the LPGA and Ladies European Tour circuits who will participate in the Aramco Team Series tournament, a miniseries of five team competitions played for one million US dollars. The starting field in Clearwater includes the biggest stars Lexi Thompson, Megan Khang, Carlota Ciganda, Brittany Lincicome and the highest-ranked golf player in the world rankings (8th), Charley Hull.

According to the original plan, Davidson Spilková was to stay in Prague after the tournament in Morocco and only fly to the United States on the weekend to refine her game in Florida before the event.  Unexpected circumstances, however, changed her plans.

“There was some insidious virus rampant among the players in Morocco. It got to me already on Sunday evening on the way back to Prague, and on Tuesday, I couldn’t even get out of bed. I couldn’t train and had to postpone the flight to the United States. Instead of Sunday, I flew to Florida on Monday, and even now, I don’t feel the best. But the tournament is still far away, and hopefully, I will get better quickly here in warm Florida,” the player wrote after landing in Tampa.

Davidson Spilková will play the three-round tournament, which will take place from Friday, 8 March, to Sunday, 10 March, in four-member teams. Team captains select one player, another player is drawn and the fourth member is selected for the team from among amateurs. Together, they play the first two rounds for a total reward of 500,000 US dollars, from which each professional receives a third. Only the best-placed players progress to the third round, where each plays for themselves for the second half of the total reward.

“All the Aramco team events are a little treat for us. Not only do we play in interesting competition and for interesting rewards, but there are fewer of us here, we have more time on the course, and it’s different, calmer and more diverse. Also, I’m really glad to be back in Florida for a while, where I feel at home. I feel like I know it well here, and I’m only an hour’s drive from Sarasota, where I plan to spend the whole next week training before flying to Australia,” the professional said from Florida.

Until the last moment, it was not clear who would carry Davidson Spilková’s clubs.

“I considered one of the local professionals I know, but it didn’t work out in the end. So I have a club caddy, and he’s a former professional baseball player who played in Florida and even a few times in New York for the Yankees. He’s a very good golfer with a plus handicap, too. He’s a sportsman at heart who understands our sometimes specific world. So in the end everything worked out nicely, and I can look forward to the tournament,” Davidson Spilková shared.

The Czech number one will enter the tournament as a team captain and the very first player of the tournament at 8:45 am local time. Her team will include Finnish Noora Komulainen and English Gemma Clews. She will not be the only representative of Czech golf in the starting field. Another three Czech players will also appear in the competition, all with German captains – Jana Melichová in the team of Alexandra Forsterling and Kristýna Napoleaová and Sára Kousková in the team of Aline Krauter.
